10 Things NOT To Do At The Gym - Ep 33

January 27th, 2009 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

Whether you’ve been a member of a gym for five years or five days, the rules still apply to everyone.  Rules?  What rules, you ask?  Being able to utilize your gym membership to your best potential — and not offend anyone in the process — requires some guidelines you should follow.

Sure, you know not to leave your towels laying around, or to not spit on the track (I hope).  But there are other simple “social” rules of the gym that you may be violating.  No worries, though.  Just watch this week’s episode of Made Fit TV to see my top ten list of things you should NOT do at the gym.

Hello Jenn! Good episode. My list of '10 things' is somewhat similar. Haha the only difference is Ego Guy (the guy who does one rep of super heavy weight with horrible posture, then walks around for 10 minutes before he does it again, all while barking).

Hey Jenny, where would this guy fall on your list? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjM6cWgQnM8

LOL. Sorry I posted links to Doug on the King of Queens twice but this and the pole dancing episode really gave me no choice haha.

Awesome episode though, I used to work as a personal trainer at a local fitness center and work out there myself and you can't believe how many times I had to go approach hot-shot teens or juice-heads because they're screaming, not re-racking the weights, etc. It was even more annoying when I was the one working out.

So basically I made sure to always workout during the quietest times. Now I'm forced due to my job to workout during or slightly after prime-time and it sucks. :(
  • X, this is AWESOME! "Angel is the centerfold..." Great workout song LOL!
I find myself sometimes grunting very quietly under my breath, but that's about it. Oh, and sometimes I do have to check my muscles in the mirror during contest-prep. So, I guess anyone can be an lil' offender : )

    this is a good one..

i hate to say but i can list 4 of those i do wrong!!

I'm sure we could all make our lists of these things and go on for days!!

Can I just mention the inappropriate gym attire?! I've seen anything from khakis and jeans, to REALLY TIGHT, SHORT shorts that some girls wear to run and/or do moves in which don't leave much for the imagination and cannot be comfortable, and of course there are women not wearing sports bras to run... Not to say the guys are off the hook, they have their own fashion disasters!

There is the also guy who sweats profusely and proceeds to wipe it off his face and throw it away from himself (all over the machines/floor/anyone nearby!!). I always cringed when I had to run next to him.

Then there are the people who won't ask how long someone is going to be on a machine, but are very rude if they have to wait and stare over your shoulder at your time. Now I understand waiting is miserable, but there are better ways to handle the situation! That is always a big issue at gyms with waiting, but we need some common courtesy that goes both ways in terms of trying to use your time wisely, respect, and communicating with each other (nicely!).

And, in a small gym at least, how about not blasting the TV so loud that someone near it is getting a huge headache? Then again, there are always the people who must be going deaf while listening to their ipod so loud that I can sing along.

Now I feel bad for complaining, so I will say this - There are some really nice people who work out and understand that we're all dealing with the same issues and equipment, and do their best to make it less stressful to work out!! :)

Katie, you are so right about the sweat being sprayed all over the place. When I used to train at a gym, this man was a wanna-be boxer and would jump rope for a half-hour straight and sweat so much that it would splash all over the advanced training area! Worst of all, it sprayed on me once or twice! AAAAHHHH!!!

i know Hurcules.. i believe i know the Freak Show Trio (back when they were a duo right??) Dont remember Ferrari :-D
  • Ferrari probably didn't last too long when he found out that the chicks weren't digging his sweet Ferrari jumpsuit or outrageously large gold bracelet that required him to reduce the weight on one side of a machine to even it out.

I love this episode... i can see it also served as a venting episode huh??? ;-) i had an old man take a front row seat to watch me doing rows. i later found out what he wanted to know.... "why do girls want muscles?"
  • @Rebekah I'm glad you can relate!! Everyone can if they're in there as much as we are, for sure!
  • LOVE THIS EPISODE! :-) Made so much sense, and it was such a fun one! They are all so true. I work @ an all-female gym, but that entire list still applies! I get bothered by the girls on the ellipticals who are on their cellphones - I don't know why, but it just BUGS me! Keep rocking it! Chris's comment cracked me up, I totally know the Ferrari dude!!!! AHH!
  • @ChrisSonjeow ROFL!!!!! OMG!!!!
  • Great episode Jen. And yes, we all know the creepy people at the gym. Let me list a few...Hurcules, The Freak Show Trio, Ferrari (the fat, greasy guy who doesn't really workout, he just walks up and down the floor all day talking on his cell phone and wearing his Ferrari brand jumpsuit), Cult guy (he does the strangest, most eccentric exercises that he obviously made up which include: The palm stretch, the leg wiggle and the jumping bean.)

    What a fun episode.

Thanks for the rules Jen! Some people don't understand common courtesy! One of my other pet peeves: women who take up a large portion of the counter to do their makeup in the locker room! I mean, how spread out does your mini Sephora store need to be? Please make some room for those of us who need to use the mirror also!
  • @Steven Thx so much for watching, Steven, and for showing enthusiasm for the things I care so much about! It's good to know that my approach is getting through to people : ) It's not about hype or quick fixes - it's all about reality with me. XOXOXO
  • I totally loved this episode. I loved your personal and down to earth manner. i feel that you really are providing some great information to people and really helping to keep them motivated,

Keep up the good work and I wish you every success..
