How To Stay Motivated at the Gym - Ep 39 - Made Fit TV

March 11th, 2009 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

Besides time and money, motivation is one of the biggest factors that can make or break your health and fitness results.  Without that inner drive to be consistent and keep trucking along, you end up letting yourself down - and that’s a bad feeling.

Being a personal trainer, I am a motivator.  People use me to push them to do something they believe they are incapable of doing on their own.  But neither me or any other trainer out there can’t train you forever, right?  So, the next step is to find out what, inside you, can help motivate you to reach and maintain your goals.

In this week’s Made Fit TV episode, I answer a couple of the many emails I have received on the topic of Motivation.  Check out my list below of some little tips that can make a huge change in how you look at exercise.  Even if you can only relate to one tip, it’s going to make staying “on track” a lot easier for you!

#1 Set Small Goals

#2 Prioritize Exercise

#3 Focus on Numbers that Really Count

#4 Eat Healthier

#5 Secretly Compete with Yourself

#6 Surround Yourself with Supportive People

#7 Don’t Give up your Power!

Thanks for the motivation! It's very frustrating when people don't understand the "I can't come out tonight, I have to work out." It's definitely hard without a proper support system or putting yourself first!

I always reset my goals every week and try to put the last week behind me. It's tough, especially when results are slow to come. Or when you can't quite figure out the diet/exercise combination that works best for your body. It's a challenge.

Thank you so much for the post. As always, you have the best advice and deliver it in such an accessible and funny way. I just stopped going to see my trainer and I feel like I can do it on my own. Keep up the good work! See you next week.
  • Thanks! Yeah, just remember that great feeling you get when you've accomplished a workout with your trainer. That's great motivation right there, and not much beats it!
  • Good advice as always. Sometimes it's hard to get motivated. I sometimes force myself and say, "It's only two weeks." If I can get past that first two weeks of solid nutrition and working out, the third week becomes easier, then the fourth.

After that, you need to leverage your new found energy and strength into a new activity you've never tried before...something cool, like rock climbing or racquetball. It's enough to keep you motivated through the next month or so.

From there on out, you're in the routine and bathing suit weather comes. I don't think Jenny coined this phrase but I've heard her say it and it's so true: "Skinny feels better than anything tastes."

    Great show.
  • Jennifer,

You rock! I'm going to take your advice and get motivated!!!

    Thanks
