The Perfect Calf Muscle Workout - Made Fit TV - Ep 74

December 1st, 2009 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

Can you believe that calf implants are the newest trend in plastic surgeons offices?!?  We go from wanting bigger breasts, smaller waists, thinner thighs, and plumper lips to, now… big calves.  It’s a craze with the fella’s and a curse for the ladies.  So, what gives?

Well, the size of your calves are probably 80% determined by not your workout - but genetics.  Some people have huge melons as calves and never worked out a day in their life; while some others have the skinniest calves and have played football for 20 years.  A lot of times, we’re just a product of our natural body type.  (If you want an idea of what body type you may be, check out Episode 66 “Is Your Body Type Working Against You”.)

In this week’s Made Fit TV episode, I show you some killer exercises for your calves to at least give them the benefit of the doubt in building them up to become stronger, perform better, and hopefully get bigger!  Just know that you can’t shrink any muscles through exercise.  The only way muscles can atrophy is by doing nothing!  So, if you’re doing nothing and still have big calves, then you are the envy of many guys out there, I’m sure!

how often should you do calf raises? everyday or do you alternate?
  • Thanks for your patience in me replying to your question... Yes, alternate every other day or just hit them three days a week. Recovery time is just as important as the exercise itself : )

Do calves respond more to high reps bcos u suggest 20-30 reps or is it OK to go heavy with 5-8 reps if u r going for bulk?
  • You can mix it up and implement heavy weight and lower reps in between the high rep sets. But, like I always stress, a secondary muscle such as the calves only get as big, naturally, as the body allows. So, for you, focus more on performance versus how they look and they will find their optimum shape and size : )

i like my body but the only thing is is that i have a SMaLL BUTT that looks FLAT!:(
wut can i do do get result faster????
  • Many people have areas that they can't build up are have trouble building based on their body type. What can help is if you train your legs and glutes with compound movements. Also, give your body time to respond, like 3 months at least. Don't obsess, though. Genetics does sometimes determine our body shape and type, so just focus on training your entire body and eating well and your body will find it's natural shape : )

Great video, Jenny. I like to do a super set on the leg press machine. I do 15-20 leg presses then go straight into the calf work. The great thing about doing the calf work on the leg press machine is that you can do regular calf raises, then toes pointed out then toes pointed inward.

By the way, I work out my calves, but I've always had fit calves-like my mom. However, the downside is that it's hard to find boots...lol.
  • Hi Diane! Yes, I do calves on there, also - it's so convenient! The more I train and compete, my boots and jeans are getting tighter and tighter!

Great video... The only thing I do for my calfs is do raises on the leg press machine after doing the leg presses. I squat pretty heavy (500 lbs) and the calf sure burn after. Do you think putting that much weight would build up the muscle?

    Jenny,
I am going to plug this webisode on my physical training class website. The girls in my class need to hear this from you instead of me. I told them that their "girly calves are like there motha's girly calves YAHH"..
  • LOL! That is awesome! I can just hear the Arnold voice as I read that : ) Thanks so much for supporting my videos and my teachings. I hear ya, sometimes my own clients don't even listen to me, either. I think it's like how we don't listen to our own parents, but we listen to our cooler Aunt or Uncle, maybe??

    By the way great calves!
  • Aw, really?? Thanks! My sister, Nicole, has way better calves - and leg muscles - than I do! She got the legs and I got the upper body LOL!

I just wanted to tell you I think your awesome! I'm also a personal trainer with a website and I love checking your website out. Keep it up!
  • Sweet, you're a trainer, too! I love to get feedback from my fellow trainers out there because there is always something new with every professional you meet. Thanks so much for watching and for supporting Made Fit TV : ) XO
  • Some people are unfortunate not to have a bit of calf muscle and others like myself don't need calf implants, but it sure would be nice to have some of the calf taken away. Mine are rather large for a female. So how can I shrink them a little?
  • Yeah, many people hate their rather larger calves if they have them. Like I mentioned above, you can't "shrink" your calves. Whether or not you are physically active and have large calves, they won't budge. But, I guarantee you that many people envy your calves (me, for instance!) So embrace them and put them to good use at the gym or in a sport! Thanks so much for your comment! XO
