Delicious Protein Shake Recipes - Made Fit TV - Ep 84

February 9th, 2010 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

One of the most popular questions I receive in my emails and comments is “What is a good protein shake to drink?”  After directing people to Episode 53 “What Protein Supplement is Good For Me?”, I continue by saying that you can add whatever you want to a protein shake that makes it nutritious.

However, sometimes leaving room for too many options leaves many to feel lost and undecided still on what to add to them.  In addition, there is also a direct relation to the ingredients in your shake to what time of day you are training and when to drink them. So much to think about!

Well, not to worry!  In this week’s Made Fit TV episode, I provide you with two delicious and healthy protein shakes straight from my own nutrition plan!  It features one shake recipe that Chris loves, and one that I love!  Check out the video and print off the recipe and nutrition information below so you can make these shakes part of your meal plan, also!

Strawberry Banana Cheesecake Protein Shake

Ingredients: 1 scoop vanilla or cookie-flavored protein powder of your choice, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/4 cup water, 4 or 5 thawed frozen or fresh strawberries, 1/2 large banana, 1 tsp dry sugar-free strawberry jello mix, 1 tsp dry sugar-free cheesecake jello pudding mix, 3 ice cubes

1. In a blender, combine the water, ice cubes, and milk, followed by the protein powder, and strawberries

2. Mix for 30 seconds to allow the strawberries and ice cubes to break up

3. Stop the mixer and add in the banana and dry jello mixes

4. Blend for about another minute or two to desired consistency

5. Enjoy!  (Add more water if you want it less thick)

* This shake is best enjoyed as a morning meal replacement or one hour before an intense cardio or weight-lifting session because of the higher blend of carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, and protein. You can also split it in half for two meal replacements or snacks on a recovery training day.

Nutrition Info:

320 calories, 3g fat, 35g carbs, 7g fiber, 25g sugar, 27g protein

Peanut Butter Mocha Protein Shake

Ingredients: I scoop of vanilla or cookie-flavored protein powder of your choice (if using chocolate flavor, cut the cocoa powder serving in half), 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 1 tbsp natural peanut butter, 1/4 cup skim milk, 1/2 cup chilled brewed coffee, 1 packet of sugar substitute of your choice (splenda, stevia, etc.)

1. In a blender, combine the coffee and milk, followed by the protein powder, cocoa, peanut butter, and packet of sugar substitute

2. Mix for one to two minutes, or until desired consistency

3. Add 2 ice cubes if you want it thicker

4. Pour it in a glass over ice and enjoy!

*This protein shake is best enjoyed as a meal replacement or snack 30 minutes before a cardio or weight-lifting session, especially in the morning for an extra boost of energy.  The higher fat and amounts and lower carb amounts are great for figure athletes in their training season.

Nutrition Info:

250 calories, 10g fat, 10g carbs, 4g fiber, 2g sugar, 25g protein

I love your site, I am so glad I stumbled on here! I am going to become a member! I just wanted to say that I add about a handful of baby spinach to my shakes. You can't even taste it, and you get your greens :) It will make your shake a little green and you'll see the baby bits, but it doesn't have to be pretty to be good for you!
    -Jennifer
  • Hi JennNichole! I got your email and will get back to you soon : ) That idea about the quick spinach into your shake is an awesome one! You're right - there is no way you would really be able to taste it. Eventually I want to do a recipe on a green smoothie - just want to get the right combo down and have it be unique. Thanks and chat with you soon!

Is it OK for someone who is just starting to make a routine out of going to the gym and who is considered obese to have protein shakes before a workout? Does it slow the weight loss progress or can it increase the process?
  • Hi Ney! Protein shakes are a great way to supplement protein in your diet. The standard american diet makes it hard for us to get in enough protein - which can work against us because protein is crucial for energy, immunity, metabolic maintenance, and blood glucose levels. So, having a shake before and after a workout is fine. But I would say save the shakes for meals or snacks that you have to eat on the run and use the time you have to prepare real meals. As for weightloss or weight control, eating the right foods and eating frequently is what complements a good workout plan. So, as long as you are eating healthy selections and portions throughout the day, you will be good : )
  • Nice informative post!I think that protein powder is very popular with people who workout and exercise. But protein power can also be used to start the day in the form of breakfast.
  • Absolutely! A shot of protein in a shake or in your oats is a great breakfast : ) My favorite, for sure!

Recipe submission: In the summer, I like to mix together in a magic bullet, a 1/4-1/2 cup of frozen blueberries, half a very ripe banana, a 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries, a very small piece of dark chocolate (72% or greater), a scoop of vanilla protein powder, a 1/4 cup of plain, lowfat yogurt, and a splash of chocolate soy milk. Yum!
  • Wow, that sounds so good with the dark chocolate! I have to take it easy on the dairy and fruit myself, but we totally appreciate you posting this and will consider it for our contest : ) Thanks again, Kathy!

Mine is very simple to make - Scoop of Nectar Fuzzy Navel protein powder & a "drop in" packet of Sugar Free Orange Hawaiin punch - Love Love love it - 23grams of protein only 90 cals! I just mix it with 20oz of water and go. : ) Let me know if you choose to try it & can't find the Hawaiian punch - certain areas it's harder to find. I could certainly send you some! Good stuff -simple but tastes so good.
I watched the podcast today - will be getting the SF Jello's tonight to try these this weekend : ) they both look tasty! I'm leaning more towards the cheesecake one tho - hmmm.. i bet it'd be awesome if you froze it and ate it like a frozen treat!!! HUGE thanks to you and Chris for putting some awesome information out there. I like to stop by and catch the Saturday shows too - love the q & a sessions - fun times!
  • Hi Kasey! Thanks so much for posting that fuzzy navel recipe - man that sounds good!! I have been meaning to buy some SF Orange Jello mix, so I am definitely going to get some now! Thank you so much for your support for Made Fit TV and for using the info for your benefit : ) See you Saturday!

Trying to juggle 2 kids in the morning before school, a smoothie is the easiest thing for me to make and take. Pretty simple too....

    3/4 cup fat-free milk
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (I use Activia most of the time)
1 banana, small to medium in size
    1 tbsp natural peanut butter
    1 scoop whey protein powder
    About 10 ice cubes
  • Yes, I would have to assume that would be a feat getting them off to school while taking care of your breakfast. But, that is part of the job when managing your health and fitness, so good for you for sticking to it! That is a good lead for your children to follow in : ) This is a good recipe, too
  • Lucky4Adair
    One from my general selection....

1 cup of fat-free milk (or soy-milk, your choice)
    1 small banana
    1/4 cup slivered almonds
    1/4-1/2 cup raisins (your liking)
    1 scoop of whey protein
    1/2 cup ice cubes
  • This sounds great! Thanks so much for posting it : ) Mmmmm, I want raisins now!
  • May Siu

Here is my protein fruit smoothie recipe...

(I usually just eye how much of each thing I put in the blender.)

    Half of a banana
    Frozen fruit:
    a few strawberries
    a few mango pieces
    a few peaches
    a few blueberries

    Then, I add:
1 scoop of vanilla whey protein
    1 splenda
    a half tsp of honey
1-2 tsp. R.W. Knudsen Papaya Nectar (optional; in juice isle)
fat free milk OR Silk Light Soy milk- 2-3 tbsp. (but may need a splash more)
    a little crushed ice

    AND blend!
This is a good way to get a smoothie that allows me to control the calories, ingredients, etc. It also gives me my fruit for the day. I usually drink it after a workout so the protein can help fuel my muscles. Enjoy!

    Loved the protein shake ideas!

    Here's my all time favorite:

"Healthy version of Bubble Tea PROTEIN Shake"

Chia seeds (soak 15-30 mins prior)
    1/4 of crushed ice
1 scoop Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla protein drink
1/2 cup of cold blk coffee or 1/2 cup cold green tea
1 tbl sp of coffee creamer or 1/4 cup of frozen fruit of choice
    2 tsp of stevia (optional)
1 dollip of cool whip or heavy cream on top (optional)
    1 straw (optional)
    1 glass cup

(Most important step) Soak Chia Seeds in water 15 - 30 mins prior. Once it's ready, put soaked Chia seeds & ice in the bottom of a glass cup. Mix the rest of the ingredients in until desired consistency & sweetness. Then pour mixture on top of the chia seeds and dollip of cool whip or heavy cream on top.

Sorry forgot to add measurements for dry chia seeds! I usually use 2 tablespoons of dry chia seeds into 4 tablespoons of water.
  • Amasiandee
Just registered & noticed my name was listed as "Guest". So it was me who posted the bubble tea recipe. And it should be "1 scoop Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla protein POWDER".....

    I'm sorry again Jenny! :(
  • Hi Amasiandee : ) That sounds like such a cool recipe! Thanks so much for posting it : ) Hope to chat with you on Saturday!
  • thomas_diane84
Frozen bananas are VERY awesome in protein shakes, it gives me a creamier texture, closer to a milkshake.

I will be trying these this weekend! thanks Jenny!
  • I'm going to remember that! I'm bad at crushing or blending ice, so that will come in handy : ) Thx!
  • Paul
Hey Jenny thanks for the ideas, and thanks for being straightforward. Bananas and chocolate work well too, although I use a full banana. I am glad I discovered this site!
  • Thank you, Paul, for watching and supporting Made Fit TV! Feel free to send me any show ideas if you ever have one that you want to see : )

I just wanted to say that I never thought to add a scoop of Jello to my shakes. Must try that :)

My recipe is pretty simple as I am always in a hurry out the door in the morning:

    1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
    1 cup low-fat or non-fat milk
    1/2 banana
    1 cup blueberries
    1 scoop whey protein powder
  • This is a great shake, thanks for contributing : ) Yes, I would recommend buying the sugar-free jello and puddings in all flavors and play around with them. You'd be amazed the difference they can make in sprucing up a shake with little change in nutrition count!
  • fuzz2010
Thanks so much for the mocha shake im going to try it out tomorrow morning!
The two shakes i LOVE and cant get enough of is a Blueberry & Cream protein shake & Pina Colada Passion protein shake

    Blueberry & cream
-Scoop of Cookies & Cream protein power (or vanilla)
-table spoon of frozen blueberrys(you can add more)
-300ml of skim milk (more or less depending on how thick you want it)
    - two pumps of pure liquid egg whites (i like extra protein but you can skip this)
-table spoon of fat-free vanilla flavour yougurt (gives it a sweeter creamier flavour)

    Pina Colada Passion
-12 oz. of water (depending on how thick you want it)
    -3 to 4 ice cubes
-3 scoops vanilla protein powder (not tried it with other flavours yet)
-1/3 cup of Pineapple chunks (can be fresh or canned but if canned drain and wash away the juice with water-too much sugar)
-2 teaspoons of Coconut extract (gives it a nice kick)
  • Whoa, these sound AMAZING! Thanks so much for posting them and for having faith in my whimpy mocha shake, LOL!
  • fuzz2010
Thanks Jenny, let me know how you got on if you try them, your iced mocha shake went down nicely! A few of my friends seen me drink it this morning and tried some too and are going to make it in future instead of getting a frappacino from starbucks (with all them calories and sugar!)
  • OMG, that is so cool to know that your friends liked it, too!!! Look out Starbucks : ) LOL! Thanks so much for trusting me and trying it out! You're awesome : )
  • Jen
Those sound great! I'm trying them both this week - thanks for sharing!
  • I hope you enjoy them, Jen! Let me know which one you prefer : )
  • Hey great shakes!! I think I prefer the peanut butter mocca one. I just love coffee and chocolate. Definitely gonna try it!!

    Two shakes I can recommend:

Half a banana, 1 tbs of cocoa (the darkest you can find), protein-powder, a little bit of coconut milk, some water and maybe stevia. That's probably my favorite pre-workout shake...

The second one is with whey protein powder again, a bit of almond milk, half an apple, a little bit of lemon juice, cinnamon, a tiny bit of cardamom and nutmeg (careful with those!), water and some stevia.

Concerning the exact amounts I put in there, especially concerning water and stevia: That really depends on my mood I guess. Just do it to your liking! ;)
  • Wow, those sound so AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing them : ) I love coconut milk! I guess I have to since my father-on-law is thai and most of his dishes contain some sort of derivative of coconut in them, LOL! Hope you like my shakes - but yours sound much more colorful!
  • Yes, I'm sure I'll love your shakes! They sound fantastic!! :)

Haha, glad you like coconut milk too. I'm an addict. My Name is Gabriela and I have a problem. I'm going nuts without my coconut shot. I have some sort of coconut every day!! Same story with chocolate and coffee. I mean, I understand the coffee addiction. I'm European.... But Coconut?! I have no relation to that whatsoever. My Country (Austria) is certainly no tropical paradise. It's soooo cold over here at the moment...

Anyways, thank you SO MUCH for this website! It's so great! I love your workouts and it helps me a lot to keep motivated! <3
I always loved sports, but it's only recently that I started to take it more seriously. I really want to do it on a regular basis now. Not that much cardio or ballgames anymore... Bring on the weights and some more intensity!! I want to see some definition! 8kg (~15lbs) have to go until the beginning of July. And I mean it! Rooaaarr... LOL :D
  • doug941
I don't like coffee but the strawberry banana cheesecake shake sounds great! Is there really 25g sugar in it? Just curious as to where it comes from. Is there much sugar in your protein powder?
Keep up the great work Jenny!
  • Hi Doug! Yes, the reason there is so much sugar in the first recipe is due to the fruit, unfortunately. But, as I suggested in the blog post below the video, you can make this recipe and then split it into two meal/snack replacements if it's too filling for you. It really is soooo freaking good! I can't eat it yet because of my show, but I certainly will after : ) And, THANK YOU so much for introducing our show to your support group!! I was blown away when you posted that!! Please have them send us any feedback they thought of it or would like to see on Made Fit TV. You're such an awesome supporter, Doug, Thank you!
  • Hey Jenny :D
Love the shakes (I myself would go for the peanut mocha one since I am a sucker for peanut butter)
My favorite thing to do for protein is chicken breasts :)
I usually get 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts and marinate them with a bit of lemon juice for about 5 minutes then put them on a baking sheet with parchment paper seasoned with a pinch of salt and black pepper then a pinch just over the top of the breasts as well. bake them for 30-40 minutes flipping half way through :) the nice zing of the lemon really goes well with the cracked black pepper but isn't too overpowering.
i make all 6 then they feed my boyfriend and i for the week and keep in the fridge wrapped in tinfoil and in a ziplock bag.
a nice thing to put over a salad or even in a nice veggie stir fry or even on its own to be honest :D
  • Glad to know you liked the pb mocha one : ) Most people I am seeing prefer Chris's over mine, LOL! That's ok, his does have more sugar in it, so it makes it yummier : ) Thanks so much for sharing your chicken recipe. It's similar to what I do but I use lemon-pepper seasoning from the shaker. I've always loved that stuff! I even put it in tuna. You can never go wrong with lemon!

My wife and I love the show on saturday. We like the strawberry banana cheesecake.

When I was a kid my mom would make Fruit Punch Kool-aid or the strawberry banana Kool-aid. So I decide a year ago to find something like that.
The ingredient are 1 packet of Crystal Light "On The Go" Fruit Punch flavor or the strawberry-banana flavor, follow by one scoop of protein powder(vanilla), 1/2 of a banana, 1/4 cup of water or soymilk. Optional 3 whole strawberry
  • Hi Jerry, thanks so much for joining us on Saturdays : ) That recipe sounds awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing : )
