Spending Smart on Your Health - Made Fit TV - Ep 83

February 2nd, 2010 | Comments | Email This Post Email This Post |

Nothing bothers me more than to know that most people take better care of their cars than their bodies!  People tend to use the excuse the “being healthy is expensive.”  Well, same with going to college, but most of us do it anyway and go into debt in the process! But, why do we do it?  Because it is an investment in our future.  Same thing with your health.

Health is only as expensive as you make it. It is not something that you can go into debt with because the healthier you are, the longer and better quality life you will live.  In other words, health is an investment that will pay you with priceless gains.  The key is to be smart about what you invest your time and money into.  In this week’s episode of Made Fit TV, I show you Six Ways to Spend Smart on your Health that can save you money and get you healthier at the same time.

Great vid Jenny me and my wife have started doing just this and the results are amazeing. For intense we like video games so we saved up and got the wii fit plus for ourselves so no matter what we had no reason to not do at least some kind of work out every day. and we also now use it for party games that are very active. This plus eating better has done wonders for us. Jenny you are a great motivator please keep up the good work so many people need to hear the truth about health.

The common theme seems that people are willing to spend their money on quick fix solutions to get healthy, but not willing to spend their money to actually WORK! LOL If someone doesn't want a gym membership, they should look into local parks/stadiums where they can find a track or path to get cardio. Also basic moves like push-ups, squats, lunges, etc are absolutely free!

Another way to save money, I found, is by getting my produce at a farmer's market (versus supermarket). Not only is the food less expensive, but it's a good way to contribute to your local economy.
  • YES, that is a great way to save money while supporting your community - local markets! I don't have one near me except for a few weeks during the summer : ( But that is perfect! And, as for the quick fixes, that's why I love providing free info and workouts because I like to prove to people that in-home workouts and working with what you have access to can be a great way to get your body in the best health and shape of your life. No gyms or equipment required - just knowledge and creativity : ) Thx Linda! PS- Thanks again for the pair workout email! We'll be posting another one if the future.

Ohhh, and i wanted to comment about the food budget, i forgot ups. We are five in my home, i don't want to mention how much we spend 'cause i don't want to scare you ;-) but i try to apply some tricks, like buy the fruits and vegetable of the season (are very cheap), everytime i can i go to the local market where everything is fresh and cost less, i make my own low fat yogurt (i add a scoop of my favorite protein powder and a bit of vanilla and it's so yummi!!!), well, tricks to feed my family the healthiest possible, without going bankruptcy. Good luck everybody, and XOXO again to Jenny : )
  • Yes, very good that you are finding creative - yet healthy - ways to cut corners and spruce up your food! And never feel ashamed about what you spend on your food budget! We as humans need to eat and as long as you are eating healthy for your body, you should not apologize on how you choose to do so : ) Thanks Mary for the great ideas!

I FOLLOWED YOUR RECIPE FOR GRANOLA BARS AND DIDN'T HAVE ANY FLAVOR. MAYBE YOU CAN CHECK THE INGREDIENTS AND MAKE IT TASTE BETTER ADD MORE SPLENDA OR FAT FREE SUGAR FREE PUDDING (ANY FLAVOR) . SOMETHING -SNACKING HEALTHY DOES NOT MEAN HAVE TO BE PLAIN.
  • LOL! Yes, they can be a little bland. However, yours is the first complaint I've had on this one. This is typically a favorite amongst my viewers. But I always encourage my viewers to spice up any recipe that I supply them with if it does not suit their tastebuds. So, have at it! Add in whatever you like, as long as the recipe still maintains it's healthy and nutritious make-up : )

Hi Jenny, you're absolutely rigth, it's so common hear friends and people you know that being healthy is expensive, eating rigth is expensive, ¡Workout is expensive!, come on. It's great you take time to mention it, 'cause ¿what thing in the world can be more important that ourselves? I have a campaign in my circle against junk food, expensive and not healthy at all!!! There is nothing more yummi that cook hamburgers and fried (not fried) chicken at home with healthy and delicious ingredients, is a lot of fun, and you keep control of the quality (and sooo cheap) i cook my french fries in the oven, less fat, more flavor. Being healthy is a priority for me, my two girls deserve a healthy energetic usefull mom, thanks again Jenny for contribuite in that. Come on everybody, we can do it, we can improve ourselves everyday!!!! XOXO Jenny you are THE BEST!!!
  • Thanks for supporting my information, Mary! People forget that you have to take care of yourself and fuel your body with the right nutrients, otherwise what good of use are you to your family?? If you are not healthy yourself, you are not setting a good example and are lacking the energy to take care of them : )

Hi Jenny, I would be curious to know what is your budget for food per month? My boyfriend and I spend 600 euro (about 835 dollars) on food per month for the two of us, proteine powder included. We don't eat out a lot, so this budget is mainly spent in the supermarket buying good food (vegetable, meat, fish ect). So I do think good nutrition is a bit expensive, compared to buying less nutricious food (pasta, breakfast cereals, ready made stuff ect.)
  • Hi Elise, I would say that it is probably about $400 per month for us. I have a pretty mixed diet and combination of many foods when I'm not competing. I think it just varies from person to person and what you believe is best to fit your standards. Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Jenny, I am a Trainer in Ontario, Canada, certified through Can-Fit Pro and I LOVE your videos ! I am also a third degree black belt in Taekwondo.
I have watched some of your videos and gotten good ideas. I REALLY love this video about gimmicks ! So many people fall into the "easy" fix. There is NO such thing. Your advice on saving money and what people can do with the $$ is excellent.
    Thanks Jenny !

  • Lorrie, it is so good to hear from fellow health and fitness professionals. Thank you for watching and for your support - and thanks for being a good leader and inspiration in what you do as well : ) Black belt in Taekwondo, huh? You're my idol!!

I agree with this point on the video. There is really no excuse for making your health a second priority. There are many ways to get fit without spending a lot of money.Besides buying weights, you can do bodyweight exercises like push ups,sit ups and pull ups at home.If there is no pull up bar then pull ups can be done at the park.If you have exercise DVD's you can workout with those along with the weights.
  • Absolutely! And that's why I love doing free videos for people to workout to on Made Fit TV because then there are no excuses; I am their free personal trainer : ) Thanks for commenting and for your support!

Great post, Jenny. I get so tired of hearing the "I can't afford a trainer" excuse. Like you said, if you look at how people spend their money on eating out, smoking, drinking, exercise gimmicks, etc., then I'm sure they cannot afford it. However, I do none of that except eat out on occasion. I have a friend who finally quit smoking after realizing he and his wife were spending ~$5k per year on cigarettes!

I am a big fan of working out with a trainer once every other week because it keeps my workouts fresh and new, and they help me with technique, diet, etc. However, people should be selective when choosing a trainer. If your trainer just sits there and counts out your reps and watches you work out, then maybe look elsewhere. I believe trainers should be involved by helping with technique, tips, advice and to be cheerleaders. At my gym, they also help you log your body fat/weight and help you write out your workouts for the week.
  • Glad you liked the video, Diane! And don't even get me started on cigarettes!!!
  • kikimartini2479
Jenny that is the truth. I bought in all the infomercial exercise equipment. What I have realized is that some work to a point but it's all a scam. Like you said with the diet pills. From experience I have taken them and all they do is keep me up at night and when I get off them I gain the weight back.
  • Hi Kiki! Good point about how those pills mess with your sleep and just normal body rhythm. And those infomercial pieces of equipment can be tools to incorporate into a program, but they are advertised as the "be all and end all" and that is just not the case! Glad to know you get it : )
  • Jim and Monica
My wife & I recently joined a gym (Planet Fitness) and bought some 20 lb dumbbells after we stopped eating out so much. We no longer go out to bars or do fast food - Instead, we put that money in a jar and each month try to buy something that contributes to our new found lifestyle of healthy living.
Thanks again Jennifer!! You've been and continue to be a huge inspiration and awesome motivator for us.. YOU ROCK!!!
  • All I have to say is WOW!! You and Monica are the poster children for how it should be done! You took control and you put your money toward things that you value - and it just so happens to be toward things that help you live a better life. Good for you - keep it up! You are an inspiration! YOU ROCK!!
