The Beginners Guide to Supplements - Made Fit TV - Ep 90

March 23rd, 2010 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

The world of supplements can be an intimidating and confusing one.  Out of all of the supplements on the market today, the majority of them are not even scientifically confirmed to do what they claim to do.  Then there’s the question of which ones are safe and for what purpose.  After endless emails on this topic, I decided to break down the basic information on what some common supplements are and if they are right for you.

This weekend I attended and shot my video from the Redford Theater in Detroit for the NPC Novice Michigan Bodybuilding, Figure, Fitness, and Bikini Championships.  Obviously, the use of supplements are huge in the sport, so I thought it would be appropriate to make it the topic of this episode.  Check out the video for a basic crash course of what some of the popular supplements are and my opinions on them, and then you can judge for yourself.

Hey Jenny I was wondering what do you think about taking prenatal vitamins if im not pregnant? I bought a bottle but I havent started taking them. I love your vids thanx so much for all of the information you provide!
Im going to continue whatching them. I weigh 211 and need to loose at least 60 pounds I think your website is the perfect supportive guidance Ive been looking for, I'll keep you posted on my journey since you are after all my inspiration! : )
  • Hi Virginia! Thanks for choosing Made Fit TV to help get you to your goals : ) You can do it! I would say that the prenatals are not necessary; a multi should do the trick. Your body will only absorb as much as it needs and then it will discard it. If you are planning on becoming pregnant in the foreseeable future, then it's a good idea to take them.

Is Kre-Alkalyn, a buffered creatine, okay to use? I take about 2 capsules per day for weight training (about 1.5g), for the past seven months, and while I have noticed great gains in muscle strength and even tone I am now contemplating its safeness. Is it an entirely different supplement, or should I begin to steer clear of it?
  • Honestly, I don't know much about it because there is no information on studies done on any side effects - which does concern me. But, if it's delivering you the results that you wanted to get out of it and you feel safe taking it, then I would imagine leaving the decision completely up to you. You know your body the best and you know what goals you want to get out of it. Just in moderation, of course : )

Great episode! I take protein powder, BCAA's & creatine.. might need to re-think the creatine now
  • Thanks! Just as long as you are taking it in moderation and listening to your body.

I've also read you should come off of BCAA if you have an upcoming surgery. Thanks for another great informative show.
  • Actually, that I was not aware of, but it makes sense. Depending on how invasive the surgery, supplements and drugs may interfere with any drugs needed for the procedure.
