Do YOU Have a Food Addiction? - Ep 97 - Made Fit TV

May 11th, 2010 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

We all have habits that serve and fulfill a purpose in our lives.  One that we can all relate to is the dreaded food cravings. We all have a sweet spot for something; fast food, sodas, coffee, frosting, cheese… the list of crazy comfort foods could go on.

Small indulgences are healthy once in a while.  But when those indulgences begin interfering with your thoughts, actions, and even your everyday life, that’s when you should take a step back and see if these “cravings” are not more of an “addiction.”

In this week’s Made Fit TV episode, I provide some tips that may help you fight those nagging food cravings that always steal your attention or sabotage your health plan.  In addition, I have provided some questions below that you can ask yourself to see if your cravings are something more severe.  Please note that if you believe that you may have an addiction of any kind, you should contact a doctor or specialist that handles that specific issue.

Are Your Food Cravings an Addiction?

Are you really hungry for what you are craving?

Do you overindulge to the point that you make yourself sick every time you give in to your craving?

Do you allow your cravings to dictate the events or outcome of your day?

What actions and/or events lead to the cravings? (Where are you when they happen? Who are you with?  What are you doing? What time of the day do they occur?)

How are you thinking when you crave? (positive or negative, happy or sad, angry or excited, depressed or content)

Do you place blame when you crave? (onto yourself, other people, situations, environment, entities, circumstances)

How do you function if you do not give into the craving? Do you turn to another addiction to fulfill the initial craving?

My tastebuds crave it to the point of overating so I am unconfortable. But I am neither sad or mad, just give in all the time instead of doing anything else. Any more advise? I can tell you I am not in meopause.
  • I experience this from time to time... You just have to recognized why you are have so many cravings. Giving into a few once in a while is fine, but all the time can snowball into big problems with your health and fitness goals. So just assess the situation when it comes about and ask yourself if it is really worth it. Being in CONTROL and holding yourself to that is the best way. Keep it up, you can do it!

Jenny is frozen mixed vegtables a healthy craving? Only reason I ask, is because I notice that there is a bit of suger per serving? As that natural suger from the carrots and corn? Thanks.
  • The sugar content in fibrous, green veggies is minuscule and no need for worry at all, so eat up!

Thanks Jenny. One more thing I wanted to know, is Malt O meal and Cream of weat considerd bad carbs (starch) because they don't have any Fiber in them? Just wondering, because I know you compete and you prob don't eat carbs with no Fiber?
  • Fiber is best in your carbs, but don't obsess - that is fine to eat : ) As long as you follow an overall healthy meal plan, you have nothing to worry about. Don't try to eat like a competitor because it is only temporary and competitors only do it for shows, not all the time.

For me it’s not about food addiction. It‘s about giving into temptation and my weakness to these foods.
