Make Ice Cream Using Bananas! - Made Fit TV - Ep 107

August 3rd, 2010 | | Email This Post Email This Post |

Why is ice cream so irresistible? When you break it down, ice cream is really just a sweet liquid made of cream, milk, vanilla, and sugar frozen into a solid.  But there’s just something about it that keeps us coming back for more! And as much as we would love to eat a pint a day, we would be putting our health in major jeopardy!

In this week’s Made Fit TV episode, I am bringing you a great idea that was sent to me by a loyal fan.  Her idea was to make a healthy, virtually fat-free ice cream made with one main ingredient: Banana!  So, check out the video and see me try it out for the first time, and how I add my own spin on it!

Hi Jenny, If you use ice cubes and a little more liquid it is a lot thicker and more like ice cream.
  • Will do! Thanks for the tip... Although I was never a fan of banana's, lol! I did this ep for one of my fans. For me, if I want ice cream I'm just gonna save up and eat the real thing because nothing compares.. mmmmmm..... :-P

    Hi Jenny,
Andrew and I loved this recipe and we are going to try it!
    Love, Mom and Andy
  • Hi!! So glad you commented and that you found the recipe intriguing! I would recommend that you freeze it for about a half hour after in case it gets soupy (like mine did!) It's good and Chris liked it a lot, too! xo
  • I tried it and I had the same problem than Jenny during the video, the fruits sticking in the bottom of the blender and the fruits on the top not mixing. But I'm sure that if you do it with a food processor instead of a blender it must be going fine and you can eat it right away because you don't have to add milk to make the mixture mix. Any frozen fruit will do. It's a nice alternative to the classic proteine milkshake that you can easily get bored with.

something about the smell of bananas makes me nauseous. I used to eat them all the time, maybe it's just a phase. I would love to see a plain vanilla ice cream version. Then I could add whatever fruit I wanted (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, etc.) to it.
  • I can understand that. Sometimes I have to be in the mood for bananas. You can try to use 2% or non-fat greek yogurt, blend it with your favorite berries and honey or agave and then freeze it? That may taste better to you

    Hey Jenny!
This is Nancy Free....Wow it's been forever since I last left a comment but I try to keep up w/ your show as much as possible!
I love Ice Cream & could eat it almost every day, but since entering my 30's something very strange started to happen. It started w/a lactose problem then red meat & now I haven't really been able to consume pretty much any animal products!!
My stomach gets very upset & the stomach pains can be so intense.
I started adopting more of a vegan life style & have learned to make almost all of my favorite dishes. I gotta say my body has never felt better, I don't have that bloated feeling all the time or that tired feeling after eating a meal anymore....My energy levels have definitely increased & I'm actually excited that my life has taken this weird, never though I would be eating this way life style!
But enough about me....I wanted to share a unique ice cream recipe I picked up along the way. I've have experimented w/many flavors but this is my favorite. I call it: "Mexican spiced hot chocolate Ice Cream"
I am Latina so this really took me back to when my Abuelita (Granny) used to make us hot cocoa on those cold Fall nights.
This is my version in ice cream form, perfect for those Hot summer evenings!!

I use Raw cashews & rinse them then soak them overnight so they get re hydrated & soft the next morning. I blend the cashews w/water until I get a smooth cream like consistency (this is my dairy & healthy fat). Depending on what I have on hand I'll either use agave or dates as my sweetener, then raw cacao powder, a tiny pinch of sea salt(to bring out the chocolate flavor), cinnamon to taste, and just a tiny dash of paprika (this pepper is the closest powder chili pepper I could find that's similar to what my Abuelita used to use) & last vanilla extract.
I blend all these ingredients up & pour it into my ice cream maker & within about 30min. I have fresh healthy one of a kind Ice cream!!
I love making large batches of this so my kids can also enjoy it & I don't feel a bit guilty because I know they're getting something nutritious & healthy into their bodies:)
My daughter's favorite is coconut & my son's is mint chocolate chip so I always make them a batch when I'm making my favorite.
I hope you give it a try sometime & let me know what you think!
Be Blessed & continue to inspire people to be healthy & fit!!
  • Hi Nancy! So great to hear from you!! WOW, this recipe is SO AMAZING! Once things settle down and my diet allows me to eat this recipe, I would love to make it if I have your permission : ) I would attribute it to you, of course. Also, so glad to know that you found a way to eat healthy with the the foods that agree with your body. We all develop intolerance with certain foods into adulthood, unfortunately, so it is good that you have found what works for you! I wish you the best and I hope I can continue to provide you with great content to complement your healthy and fit lifestyle!
  • Hi Jenny! I was so surprised to hear you say my name during the podcast! Awesome that you still remembered my question about making protein ice cream! I will give it a try! PS: this short introduction with you talking for a few seconds announcing the subject of the podcast before the "made-fit music"/opening credits begin is a good idea.
  • We like it too! Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey Jenny, Im glad u liked my recipe! The website is actually my own cooking blog, www.expatcucina.com and I got this idea from instructables.com. Yeah, your ice cream was a little bit too soupy but just refreeze and then blend it again for a few second and it will turn out perfect!

you could also go to a local health food store and look for Ice Dream it's a really healthy alt. for Ice Cream made from rice i believe there is a website you can go to ICEDREAM.com
  • I will check that out, thanks!
  • Hillsd2
Looks a little soupy for ice cream but I agree, refreezing it could be an option. Another possibility could be to transfer it into a popsicle ice tray to make banana protein popsicles. Just a thought.
  • Yes, you would want to freeze it for a couple hours and then enjoy : )
